something about human nature

Image
Image via Wikipedia I think computer viruses should count as life. I think it says something about human nature that the only form of life we have created so far is purely destructive. We've created life in our own image .   -   Stephen Hawking Related articles When Stephen Hawking Met Einstein, Newton and Data (blogs.forbes.com) Jane Fonda Meets Stephen Hawking (towleroad.com) Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow's Inadvertent Proof for God (trustinjesus.wordpress.com) Stephen Hawking And Richard Dawkins Singing About Big Bang (current.com)

Observations: Attention, Ann Coulter: Report to aisle 5 for radiation clean-up

Image
Image via Wikipedia Observations:  Attention, Ann Coulter:  Report to aisle 5 for radiation clean-up No good evidence exists for hormesis in human epidemiology, either. In her column, Coulter mentions that Japan 's atom bomb survivors lived longer than average. But that longevity has an easy explanation: the survivors received greater medical care over the course of their lives after the bombing. And although she correctly points out that identifying Chernobyl radiation deaths is tough , her analysis on the excess thyroid cancer cases is strange: she concludes that they resulted from iodine deficiency . I presume she means that more iodine (like what you might get in potassium iodide pills) would have prevented the radioactive isotopes created by the Chernobyl meltdown from getting into the thyroid. So yeah, it's the diet's fault--riiiiight. Related articles Attention, Ann Coulter: Report to aisle 5 for radiation clean-up (scientificame

Radiation: When to worry - CNN.com

Image
Image via Wikipedia Radiation: When to worry - CNN.com Nausea and vomiting are usually the initial symptoms of radiation sickness . A very severe exposure can lead to them within 10 minutes; dizziness , weakness, and low blood pressure may begin immediately. If the radiation exposure is mild, a person might not start experiencing these symptoms for up to six hours.  Check out this Mayo Clinic chart, under "symptoms" for more information about how various levels of radiation might affect a person. The simple removal of clothes and shoes eliminates about 90% of external radiation contamination , according to the Mayo Clinic, and washing with soap and water takes radiation off the skin. This lowers your risk of breathing or ingesting radiation particles, or having them get into open wounds. .. . Related articles Radiation sickness: Who's most at risk? Arranging the Solutions of f(x+y+z) = xyz

Image
Image via Wikipedia Arranging the Solutions of f(x+y+z) = xyz Arranging the Solutions of f(x+y+z) = xyz For any quadratic polynomial f(s) = as 2 + bs + c with integer coefficients a,b,c, consider the Diophantine equation f(x+y+z) = xyz. In other words, for fixed integers a,b,c we have the equation If there exists a solution x,y,z to this equation, then z is a root of the quadratic This can also be written in the form Interestingly, we have z 2 = f(x+y)/a for a solution (x,y,z) if and only if (x,y) is a solution of f '(x+y) = xy.
